Rai and Limbu people are inhabited in northeastern
part of Nepal. It is believed that Rai are the generation
of a couple of god -Paru Hang and Sumnima. Sumnima was very
beautiful girl with divine power wandering on earth and
Paru Hang was a smart god wandering in the sky and looking
for a sweet heart. Paru Hang threw a magic comb to the earth
to attract Sumnima and when she found the magic comb then
she became almost mad in his love. Their reunion became
in Kartic (between October and November) and gave the birth
to a couple to lead the generations that they are Rai people.
Their birth, marriage and funeral rites are completely different
than the other caste of people in Nepal. They are more close
to Hindu because it is said that the Kirantee(Rai)'s god
Kiranteshwar is a incarnation of the lord Shiva-the major
god of Hindus. According to the Nepalese history they are
migrated there from the bank of Mediterian Sea in 1400BC.
The very popular festival of Kirant people "SAKELA
NANCH" is celebrated for 10 days that lies generally
in December. They have unique specialty in culture and tradition.
There are many Kiranti villages but Mamankhe,
Lelep, Khejenim, Linkhim and Taplethok along Tamor River
valley are the model and typical Rai Kirantee villages to
visit.
