During the initial years of Tengboche monastery nuns practiced Buddhism together with monks but over the years they wanted an exclusive place for their shelter and pray. The head of the monastery Lama Guru granted them land in Deboche just below the monastery and nunnery established there amidst rhododendron and juniper forests. Once 15 nuns resided there but nowadays there are 9 old nuns.
